Scarborough Fair: Video

Scarborough Fair è una nota ballad della tradizione popolare inglese, probabilmente risalente alla prima metà del diciassettesimo secolo, che narra una favola ambientata nella cittadina di mare Scarborough, in epoca medievale un importante porto commerciale nonchè sede di fiere famose in tutto il mondo conosciuto e che attiravano commercianti e visitatori da tutto il continente europeo. La storia narra delle prove che un giovane richiede alla sua (un tempo) amata affinchè ella possa tornare assieme a lui: tali prove però sono del tutto irrealizzabili, quale ad esempio cucirgli una maglia senza ago e senza filo oppure lavargliela in un pozzo asciutto. Lei, a sua volta, gli richiede favori altrettanto impossibili, al compimento delle quali egli potrà ricevere la sua "maglia improbabile". Il termine fiera (fair) fa appunto riferimento a questo scambio di richieste. Simon & Garfunkel hanno inciso la loro versione simil-canone nel 1966 come traccia principale del loro album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme (l'emblematico testo della prima strofa, apparentemente senza senso e dovuto alle storpiature di pronuncia che esso ha subito nel corso dei secoli).
