Enter Sandman è la traccia di apertura del Black Album, pubblicato dai Metallica nel 1991. Nato da un’idea del chitarrista Kirk Hammett e composto poi assieme a Lars Ulrich e James Hetfield, è stato acclamato sia dalla critica che dal pubblico ed ha venduto più di 500 mila copie solo negli Usa, contribuendo all’enorme successo dell’album.
Nel 1992 fu nominato ai Grammy Awards tra le migliori canzoni hard rock e vinse un Mtv Music Video Award come miglior video hard rock.
E’ un vero e proprio classico della band californiana, immancabile ai loro concerti e ripreso da molti altri artisti in tutto il mondo.

[Metallica]

The Unforgiven è il terzo singolo del Black Album (1991) dei Metallica. Nella stesura del pezzo, i Metallica hanno rovesciato lo schema della ballad, adottando una strofa potente e rumorosa in contrasto con un ritornello molto più pacato, suonato con chitarre classiche. La melodia dell’intro è stata loro ispirata dalla colonna sonora di un film western, presumibilmente quella di Per Qualche Dollaro In Più ad opera di Ennio Morricone.
Per la canzone sono stati in seguito registrati ben due sequel, Unforgiven II ed Unforgiven III.

1991: l’anno del Black Album, e quindi di Nothing Else Matters, ottava traccia. Ballata totalmente in contrasto con le vecchie sonorità trash dei Metallica, Nothing Else Matters è però oggi la canzone più famosa nel mondo dei quattro californiani, grazie anche agli innumerevoli passaggi radiofonici.
Fu composta da James Hetfield per la sua prima ragazza, tant’è che lo stesso Hetfield la considerava troppo personale ed era restio a pubblicarla. Ma sotto le pressioni del batterista Lars Ulrich fu arrangiata con tanto di orchestrazione ed inserita, appunto, nel Black Album.
