Hold On è il singolo che nel 1999 lanciava il ritorno sulle scene di Tom Waits, quando erano passati 7 anni dal suo ultimo lavoro in studio (Bone Machine, 1992) e ben 12 da quello che era stato il suo ultimo vero tour, nel 1987. L’album in cui venne incluso come terza traccia, dal titolo Mule Variations, vinse un Grammy Award quale miglior disco Folk contemporaneo e vendette più di 500 mila copie in tutto il mondo, portandolo a calcare i palchi soprattutto di Nord America ed Europa. Come se non bastasse, nel 2004 il magazine musicale Rolling Stone l’ha inclusa nella speciale classifica dei 500 migliori album musicali di tutti i tempi.
Hold On invece, sempre ai Grammy Awards, ricevette una nomination nella categoria miglior performance Rock.
