Fu composta da Prince per la sua band The Family, un side project che durò dal 1985 al 1987. Nothing Compares 2 U però rimase pressochè sconosciuta fino al 1990, anno in cui la cantante irlandese Sinead O'Connor ne incise una propria cover avvalendosi del produttore inglese Nellee Hooper. Venne rilasciata come secondo singolo estratto dal secondo album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got e divenne subito una hit mondiale ricevendo una massiccia rotazione anche nei canali musicali televisivi. Alla fine è risultato tra i primi 100 singoli più venduti di tutti gli anni '90, spingendo tantissimo anche lo stesso album in cima alle classifiche. Anche il videoclip, di conseguenza, è divenuto celeberrimo: in esso viene ripresa la cantante in primo piano per quasi tutto il tempo.
