Polly venne scritta da Kurt Cobain nel 1988 con "Hitchhicker" come titolo originale, ma fu lasciata fuori dall'album d'esordio Bleach perchè non coerente alle sonorità grunge di quell'album dei Nirvana. Così fu incisa in quello successivo, Nevermind, nel 1991 come sesta traccia. Il testo racconta la sfortunata storia di una ragazzina rapita e seviziata nel 1987 a Tacoma, Washington, di ritorno da un concerto rock.
