Danny Boy: Video

Danny Boy è il titolo di una ballad molto sentimentale cantata sull'aria che prende il nome di Londonderry Air, originaria della contea di Londonderry nell'Irlanda del Nord. Il testo però, intitolato appunto Danny Boy, è opera di Frederic Edward Weatherly, avvocato e scrittore inglese che a cavallo tra il 19esimo ed il 20esimo secolo ha redatto i testi di circa tremila brani popolari. L'ufficialità di tale testo però, come è comprensibile, è ancora oggi rinnegata dagli Irlandesi del Sud e quelli d'America. Tale Londonderry Air si presume risalga alla metà del 1800, quando venne trascritta dalla musicista Jane Ross, che la udì suonare da un flautista lungo le vie di Limavady, cittadina situata nel nord della contea. Per la malinconia che esprime, il brano viene spesso suonato in occasione di funzioni funerarie religiose pur non essendo un canto liturgico. Dasl 1950 in poi, quasi tutti i più noti cantautori ed interpreti folk angloamericani si sono cimentati nell'interpretazione di questo celeberrimo classico tradizionale (impossibile nominarli tutti, ai quali oltretutto andrebbero aggiunte le numerosissime cover rock/pop/metal eccetera).
